planning your trip

The Local Chapter and larger Big Bend region are reached by only the most curious travelers. Once you get here, there are myriad experiences that are unique to this region, the last frontier, and so we suggest a week-long escape to make the most of your journey.

The Local Chapter curated 7-day itinerary:

Day 1

Hike Santa Elena Canyon* | beginner hike

The international border between the US and Mexico is created by the historic Rio Grande which cuts through the Santa Elena Canyon, an icon of the region. Once you enter the Big Bend National Park, you will drive nearly 30 minutes to the canyon, but the hike in is just minutes. Pack a picnic and dip in the water or cross the river and hike up into the canyon along a National Park a guided path.

Sunset at The Starlight Theater | drinks & dinner

Our favorite dinner spot in the area, The Starlight is a staple of local culture and a must-visit during your stay. See our dining suggestions for more details.

Day 2

Big Hill Drive | photo opportunity

Drive highway 170 between Lajitas and Presidio. For more than 30 miles the river road twists and winds with the Rio Grande, crossing arroyos, climbing mountains, and hugging canyon walls. Stop at the photo area at the top for one of the most classic shots in the area.

Hike the Hoodos | beginner hike

While on the Big Hill Drive, pull off at the Hoodoos in the Big Bend Ranch State Park for a beginner hike down to the hoodoos on the Rio Grande.

Sunset horseback ride | no experience needed

This two-hour ride is hosted by our friends and neighbors at Big Bend Stables, just two miles from The Local Chapter. The sunset ride is a guest favorite, requires no prior equestrian experience, is hosted on tame, tourist-friendly horses and provides a classic western photo opportunity. Don’t forget to pack your jeans and boots!

Day 3

Morning in Lajitas | 24 minute drive

On your way to breakfast at the Candelilla Cafe at the Lajitas Resort, be sure to stop off just after the Lajitas gas station to meet the mayor, a beer-drinking goat. The western-themed resort is well-manicured and offers morning beverages and a large menu of breakfast options, as well as a well-mannered live-in staff from around the country.

Golf at Blackjacks Crossing | scenic golf course

Many publications have rated Blackjacks as the #1 course in Texas; it would be hard to compete with this plush green course where golfers play on the scenic terrain of the international US/Mexico border. This activity is suggested even for novice golfers as touring the course by cart is worth the green fee. For reservations, contact (432) 424-5080. Bring your camera!

Day 4

Hike the Lost Mine Trail* | advanced hike

Start this 4.2 mile National Park hike early to enjoy cooler weather and less trail traffic. Most photogenic from the very top, this trail is physically challenging but hugely rewarding. Bring snacks in your pack; we suggest spending some time up top to soak in the 360 heavenly views. While many guests conquer this hike, the length and steep climb make it challenging.

Dine at the Chisos Mountain Lodge* | in the basin

Once you finish the Lost Mine Trail hike, drive a bit further into the basin of the National Park and dine at their facility. You will be hungry after the hike and this is the closest lunch destination by far. The food is generally good and the view is breathtaking. Come at the right time and meet a local black bear!

Day 5

Visit Marfa, Texas | worthwhile day trip

Marfa, Texas is an unexpected, globally known artists hub in the desert of far west Texas. The tiny (yet culturally rich) town has one main traffic intersection and very few dining options, but we highly suggest you make the trip. Most locations open Wednesday - Sunday. Start early / stay late.

  • Prada Marfa: Snap a photo at the iconic Prada Marfa in the city of Valentine, near Marfa.

  • Marfa Book Company: Shop a curated selection of books, souvenirs and gifts at one of our favorites.

  • Communitie: Get yourself an iconic Marfa cowboy hat at another one of our favorites.

  • Chinati Foundation: Discover Donald Judd at this museum campus. Tour guide suggested.

  • Hotel Paisano: Visit this historically significant hotel where James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor stayed and dine at Jetts Grill.

  • Marfa Lights: Stay past sunset and watch the Marfa Lights

Day 6

Boquillas del Carmen, Mexico* | passport required

Visit Mexico by passing through the Boquillas Port of Entry in the Big Bend National Park. Park at the passport office and walk a short distance to the Rio Grande where individuals will offer to row you across the river for a cash fee. We would also suggest booking a donkey ride into the small town, both to support the local economy and to ease the journey and travel like a local. In town, there is a restaurant with local Mexican cuisine and drinks and a souvenir shop. The hour-long drive from The Local Chapter to Boquillas is scenic and entirely inside of the National Park.

The Port of Entry is open Wednesdays through Sundays, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (November 2 - April 30) and Friday through Monday, 9:00 am - 6:00 pm (May 1 - November 1).

Boquillas Hot Springs* | bring your swimsuit

Once part of a resort, this National Park .5 mile trail is picturesque with a historic post office, palm trees and limestone cliffs lining the path. Hot spring water is considered old water, fossil water, ancient and irreplaceable. Heated by geothermal processes and emerging at 105° F., the water carries dissolved mineral salts reputed to have healing power.

The hour-long drive from The Local Chapter to Boquillas is scenic and entirely inside of the National Park. Dont forget to bring your bathing suit! Guests are welcome to enjoy the springs.

Day 7

Terlingua Ghost Town | relax & explore

Sleep in before you head to a long, late breakfast at La Posada Milagro. After breakfast, walk to the Terlingua Trading Company to grab some souvenirs and gifts - don’t miss the cute stuff for kids! On your way out of town, explore the old cemetery and discover how Terlingua became a Ghost Town.
