our history

Native Texans and husband-and-wife team, Baxter Box and Amber Venz Box, created The Local Chapter as a private retreat for the design-minded adventurer.

Frequent visitors of far West Texas and passionate natives of the Lone Star State, in 2017, Baxter and Amber found and secured 392 acres of untouched, private high desert land on the Western boundary of the Big Bend National Park and began work on a private refuge from the demands of city life.

Sharing a border with the National Park, The Local Chapter offers the most proximate and exclusive accommodations in the region, with just four private guest yurts.

The untouched desert landscape of The Local Chapter sits high above neighboring Terlingua and Study Butte on Maverick Mountain and is densely filled with native ocotillo and cactus plants. Unobstructed 360° views from each private yurt begin with the Chisos mountain range and extend to the famous Rio Grande.

The Local Chapter is located in a designated International Dark Sky Area, which provides a distinguished quality of starry nights that can be seen from the comfort of bed through the center dome of each yurt.

Intentionally situated just 100 miles from the art hub of Marfa, The Local Chapter Big Bend provides proximate activities for both the leisurely and the outdoorsman.

Withdraw from obligation and unwind with us in an adult environment as you explore the last frontier and experience the unique landscape and culture of the Texan West.
